Marcion (The Heretic) & How Paul's Epistles Got Into the Bible

Join Doug for this podcast dicsussion that occured Tuesday, Apr. 8, 2025 on the JesusNotPaul/Acts channel as he address Marcion of Sinope, the first man to put together a "New Testament" "Canon" in the early mid second century, from which he uplifted the writings of Paul not only above, but in place of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Marcion lived during the second century and was branded a heretic due to his erroneous beliefs (that gnostics also shared) that the God of the Hebrews was a malevolent "demiurge" creator diety that Marcion said was not the kind and loving and yet hidden and supreme god who he said had really sent Jesus.  This heresy led to a litany of errors, such as:

1) Marcion taught that Paul (in his epistles) brought the only true gospel as he did not closely align with the teachings of Jesus reported by the gospels and the apostles with regard to the God of the Hebrews being the one to have sent Jesus and that we were accountable to Him and His law,

2) Marcion concluded therefore that Paul was the only apostle and the twelve chosen by Jesus were disqualified due to their connection to the Hebrew God as well as their Gospel utilizing the Torah/Prophets, which he considered false.

3) Marcion's New Testament therefore included 10 epistles of Paul and a redacted Gospel of Luke (where it referenced the Hebrew God).  Marcion's gospel was the one which Paul preached in Galatians and considered all other teachings bogus and anathema, just as Paul claimed himself to the Galatians, saying "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8-9).  Well, Paul, the writers of Matthew, John, 1 John, James and Revelation and Jesus Himself would all be accursed because they preached exactly the opposite of you.  And so did Marcion, Paul's biggest proponent, and second century evangelist.

Unfortunately, though Marcion was branded a heretic, because his wealth afforded him the ability to put together his Pauline New Testament, others thereafter who were against him brought together their own groupings of "Christian" writings, and they, too, included Paul, in large part because Marcion had.

And here we are today with Paul, a satanic heretic in his own right, still in the Bible, and like Marcion, most literally hating  on the Father and God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, having metaphorically speaking defecated all over the Father's law in his writings and even the everlasting covenant of circumcision the Father had established with Abraham in Genesis 17.

We will dive further into the history of how the Bible came about, discuss Marcion's place in the timeline, and the Bible evolved to what we have today, bearing in mind that we are very fortunate to still have the Torah, the Prophets and the teachings of Jesus to guide us down the narrow path of Truth that leads to everlasting life, in spite of the tares of Acts and Paul that have been sewn in among the wheat.  Remember, the Bible is a library of books, not a single book.  We just have to pull out the tares, including Acts, the epistles attributed to Paul, and even the pseudepigrapha attributed to Peter, so that what remains can feed us as the pure, unadulterated and spiritual health giving bread of life that it is.

This will be a deep dive journey, hope you'll take a gander!
